2010 Wishes Fulfilled

We are delighted to have you share the power of a wish. Please continue to help us grant wishes – your contribution makes a big difference in the lives of these children. Here are the stories of children you helped this past year:

AdonteAdonte is a charismatic six-year-old characterized by his cuteness and his engaging smile! He loves trains, airplanes, and Mickey Mouse. For being so young, he has struggled with Undifferentiated Sarcoma from an early age. Sarcoma is a cancer that arises from transformed cells and attacks a number of tissues. However, he does not let his illness hold him back. When asked what his wish would be, he listed both Disney World and Disneyland along with visiting a train station! He finally decided on Disney World, and used a count-down calendar with Disney characters to mark the time until his trip! Adonte and his family travelled to Florida to stay at Give Kids the World Resort. They received a hopper pass to visit all four Disney parks, where Adonte met Mickey Mouse at the Magic Kingdom! He was so excited and we are grateful for all of those who made this opportunity possible for a very deserving child!

JTJT is a fun-loving fourteen-year-old. He enjoys playing video games and almost anything electronic. The Make-A-Wish® volunteers meeting with JT loved his enthusiasm. Unfortunately, JT was diagnosed with Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH), an acquired blood disorder characterized by anemia or thrombosis, and he suffers from diabetes. He is active and creative and when asked about his wish - he wanted to transform his basement to fully utilize the space and “make it fun again” for his whole family. The renovation included new furniture, a new computer, theater equipment such as a projection screen and theater chairs, an x-box, and a pool table. JT along with his family and friends can now rest cozily in the newly renovated basement—a retreat from the continuing presence of his illness.

SidneySidney is a fifteen-year-old who loves the movie Titanic and watching the majestic whales on the Discovery channel. Although she was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, the most common malignant central nervous system tumor of childhood located in the cerebellum (the part of the brain that controls balance and other complex motor functions), she wasn’t going to let that slow her down. When she was visited by volunteers from the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Georgia and Alabama, Sidney knew exactly what she wanted – to go on a cruise in order to see the whales off the coast of Hawaii during their mating season. She and her family were able to listen to the whales sing through underwater hydrophones and learn more about them by listening to a certified naturalist. Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation®, Sidney fulfilled her wish and will forever have the special memories of her cruise to Hawaii.

BrendanBrendan is a pleasant, easy-going eleven-year-old. Unlike most boys his age, he is calm and very kind. Unfortunately, Brendan and his family discovered that he was suffering from Wilm’s Tumor, a rare kidney cancer that is found primarily in children. When asked by his Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Georgia and Alabama volunteers, what his most ardent wish was - Brendan knew he wanted to travel to Atlantis with his family. He was so excited to spend some time away from the ramifications of his illness, and relax with his loved ones. Brendan went down the various slides at the resort, ate wonderful food, and swam with the dolphins. It was so great to see his smile. He and his family are very grateful for all of those who helped Brendan’s Atlantis wish come true!

EvanFour-year-old Evan is sweet girl who loves playing with her sister, dolls, watching movies, and Disney princesses. She unfortunately was diagnosed with Wilm’s – a type of kidney cancer. Despite all of her doctor’s visits and treatments, you would never know Evan is battling an illness – her adventurous spirit is truly incredible! When she and her family were visited by volunteers from the Make-A-Wish Foundation®, Evan immediately told them she wanted to go to Disney World. Her favorite movies and television shows feature Disney characters and she wanted to meet them in person and see Cinderella’s castle! In the week-long trip, she was able to experience some relief from her illness as she explored the Disney theme parks with a park hopper pass. She especially enjoyed Magic Kingdom, the home to her favorite princesses, because it had her favorite part of the wish – seeing the spectacular fireworks show! All the colors, music, and beautiful scenery really made the trip special for Evan and her family, especially because they were able to get even closer throughout the trip. She and her family are grateful for all those who helped make this wonderful wish a reality, providing her some greatly needed relief from her illness.

RubyTen-year-old Ruby will have you wrapped around her finger from the first moment you meet her. She is shy initially, but once she starts talking, you discover that she is a tremendously smart and funny girl! Sadly, Ruby was diagnosed with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia, a fast-growing cancer characterized by an overproduction of white blood cells in the bone marrow. Ruby’s illness did not stop her from dreaming, and when visited by Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Georgia and Alabama volunteers, she had so many wish ideas. It was hard to narrow them down to one! She finally decided she wanted to go on a shopping spree, because she wanted a new TV and an iPod. It is a beautiful gift to give a child with an illness - an undaunted afternoon shopping for items that will continue to provide enjoyment and endless entertainment.
